Story Behind the Art:
I’m Subagio, people called me Gio, I was born in 1989 in Sebatu, Gianyar. I’m the first child from 2 siblings. I’m a single and friends describe me as a plain, kind and honest guy. My parents are peddling for handicraft stuffs in Ubud, most people in Sebatu are making Albasia wood carving with many different style. We are making tribal and primitive styles. We are underprivileged, I used to work since I was 6 years old, by helping neighbors making orders. Learning by doing until I was 11, I can carving wood myself and started peddling my own masterpieces. My father guided me to create special process of finishing that makes the products looks antique and different from others. From this work, I can paid my own school fee from elementary school until finally graduated from a Senior High School. I’m happy can help my parents and also can buy foods for our family. After graduated from the Senior High School, I worked as cook in a Hotel for 6 years and also spent 3 year as masseur. I took any job that I can do so I can help my parent buying foods and my sibling to continue study at school. I began to focus in this carving business since there are many orders for home decors. I collaborate with my parents in making orders for customers although we have no shop. If there are no orders, we have to peddling our products in Ubud. We use wood as our material and combined with acrylic paints and gilt to get the antique look/finish. We just need traditional tools for that like chisel, mallet, knife, brush, sanding paper. I met somebody from Novica that encourages my spirit and I’m really interested in it. By joining Novica, I hope it can help me in expanding market scope and improving our products quality and also our income since I really want to make my parents happy and proud.
